SALE REPORT

68th Midshires Produce Auction – Tuesday 27th November 2018

DEMAND FOR HAY AND SILAGE SURPASSED ALL EXPECTATIONS

An entry of approximately 5,000 tonnes was offered for sale at Lutterworth Rugby Football Club, Bitteswell for the first Midshires Produce Auction of the winter. With samples available from the vast majority of vendors, prospective purchasers were able to bid with confidence as to the quality of fodder on offer.

We began with a presentation to Mr Eric Hewes, a long standing vendor at the Fodder Sales, who had entered produce into all the previous Produce Auctions. He was presented with a frame of photos from his Farm Sale which Howkins & Harrison hosted earlier this year. Howkins & Harrison would like to thank Eric for his business over the years and we hope to see him at future events.

The sale commenced with Mr Corney’s Massey Ferguson bales of Meadow Hay, for immediate delivery, achieving £85 per bale. Messrs L J Arnold sold good quality Massey Ferguson bales of Meadow Hay for £78 per bale and Messrs C J Springthorpe’s Claas Quadrant bales of Meadow Hay achieving £77 per bale.

Messrs SF & AJ Deeming’s round bales of First Year Seeds Silage, sold for an outstanding £41 per bale; Messrs TR & PD Baker from Gilmorton sold Mini Hesston bales of Haylage to £42 per bale, with Mr Heygate selling round bales of Haylage for £38.50 per bale.

Vendors, who adjusted to this year’s level of prices, were well rewarded with clearance of Wheat and Barley Straw. Poulson & Co from Sheepy Magna sold New Holland BB9090 bales of Wheat Straw which realised £33 per bale along with Massey Ferguson bales of Barley Straw from Marshall Farms achieving £30 per bale.

A late entry of Fodder Beet from Messrs White Bros saw prices achieving £35 per tonne with total clearance.

At the end of the Produce Auction, we held the Complete Dispersal Sale (Part 1) of Garage Tools from a private vendor. 40 lots were offered for sale with cases of tools making up to £45 per lot. At the Produce Auction on Tuesday 8th January 2019 we will hold Part 2 of the Complete Dispersal Sale.

We now look forward to the January Fodder Sale and with Christmas rapidly approaching, vendors are encouraged to enter lots for the next sale to be held on Tuesday 8th January 2019. Entries close for cataloguing on Friday 7th December to allow time for the catalogue to be printed and circulated prior to Christmas. Please contact Stuart Long or Jenny Hannah on 01788 564749.
