Open Farm Sunday at Bluebell Dairy

Friday, 8 June 2018

We are proud to work with and support Bluebell Dairy, who have developed their family farm into a fantastic local attraction, serving luxury artisan ice-cream, freshly made on-site.

This weekend (10th June) Bluebell Dairy will be taking part in Open Farm Sunday – the farming industry’s national open day. It will be a chance to discover how the farm is run, get a glimpse behind the scenes and learn about agricultural life.

Bluebell Dairy will also be running a number of other fun events during the day, including sheep racing, pumpkin planting and a chance to meet the newest arrivals on the farm – Tansy, Snowdrop and Rosie the alpacas. It promises to be a lovely day out for all the family!

About Bluebell Dairy

The Brown Family have been milking their herd of Holstein Friesian cows at Brunswood Farm, Locko Park, Derby since 1953.

In 2007, as a result of falling milk prices, the family looked at ways that the farm could be preserved for future generations, whilst ensuring that the cows could continue to produce their deliciously creamy milk.  The Browns came up with the idea of producing a range of artisan ice-cream to sell on-site and haven’t looked back since!

An RDPE grant helped to convert half the redundant buildings in the farmyard into a tiny production area (situated in the shed where Grandpa Brown hand-milked his very first Bluebell the cow). The enterprise began in December 2008 and since then Bluebell Dairy has gone from strength to strength, winning several awards and even a visit from HRH Prince Charles!

The farm now hosts it’s very own tea rooms (serving hot meals, cakes and of course, ice cream), play area and animal patch. There is a lively calendar of events, from tasting evenings to outdoor theatre. At Christmas, the farm is visited by Santa and his elves for a range of delightful festive activities.

Diversification in action

Bluebell Dairy is a great example of how diversification can bring extra revenue into a farm, whilst keeping the business true to its roots. If you are in the area this weekend, we would recommend a visit on Open Farm Sunday to find out more about this wonderful farm and, of course, to taste the award-winning Bluebell’s ice cream!
