Record prices for straw and hay at our Produce Auction Sale

An entry of approximately 4,000 tonnes was offered for sale at Lutterworth Rugby Football Club, Bitteswell for the first Midshires Produce Auction Sale of the winter. With samples presented from the vast majority of vendors, prospective purchasers were able to bid with confidence as to the quality of the fodder on offer.

The outstanding demand for straw certainly encouraged a wider audience of buyers to buy all the fodder on offer. Almost all of the entries made prices way above Vendors expectations.

We sold 72 Heston bales of first cut seeds hay from the Marston Partnership from Syresham, which made an outstanding £70 per bale.

Messrs L J Arnold & Sons sold good quality Massey Ferguson 2270 square bales of wheat straw for £43 per bale. Also on offer, we had New Holland BB070 bales of wheat straw from Messrs JW & BA Deacon which fetched £30 per bale along with New Holland square bales of barley straw making £37 per bale.

Messrs A & R Fyfe’s from Clipston sold Claas Quadrant Bales of seeds meadow hay for £37 per bale, along with Messrs C J Springthorpe’s from Nailstone selling Claas Quadrant bales of meadow hay realising the same price. The highest price of the day for meadow hay was from Messrs L J Arnold & Sons, Meriden selling Massey Ferguson 2270 square bales at £51.50 per bale. Demand for straw was clearly outstripping supply with buyers from all over the UK. With the weather seemingly about to turn much colder, the demand is unlikely to fall, therefore now would appear to be a good opportunity to sell your excess bales.

There was a good demand for silage and haylage, with silage peaking at £15 per round bale and £18.70 per round bale for haylage.

We now look forward to the January Fodder Sale and with Christmas rapidly approaching vendors are encouraged to enter lots for the next sale which is to be held on Tuesday 2nd January 2018. Entries close for cataloguing on Friday 8th December to allow time for the catalogue to be printed and circulated prior to Christmas. Please contact Stuart Long or Jenny Hannah on 01788 564749.
