As we rush headlong into Autumn, we have to admit that summer is finally over. But here’s the good news: autumn is a fantastic time to sell your house! You still have the benefit of longer, lighter evenings and sunny days for viewings (with a bit of luck). And there’s also the advantage of motivated buyers who have sold their houses over summer and are looking to move in time for Christmas.
We’ve put together some hints and tips on how best to sell your property during the autumn months, as the weather starts to cool and buyer’s minds turn to cosy nights at home.
Embrace autumnal colours
We’re not suggesting you re-decorate your home, but embracing autumnal colours can help your home feel cosier and warmer at this time of year. Russets, golds and browns are all lovely colours that will help your home feel autumn-ready. A few scatter cushions in autumnal shades, perhaps some coloured candles and a bunch of sunflowers will add a delightfully cosy feeling to your home.
Tidy away summer
Lots of us leave our sandals, picnic blankets and other summer paraphernalia around long after the summer holidays have ended. Make sure your home feels in keeping with the season by clearing all your summery bits and bobs away – this will help your potential buyers picture themselves spending the winter months in your home.
Warm it up
There’s nothing nicer than stepping from a chilly street into a warm and inviting home. Put the central heating on for an hour before your viewings begin, to make sure your potential buyers associate your home with warmth and comfort.
Light and bright
Never under-estimate the power of good lighting! This is especially important as we get closer to winter and the days start to get shorter. If you have energy saving bulbs, switch them on well before a viewing to make sure they have enough time to fully brighten. Lamps can also be highly effective in giving a room a cosy glow to entice your buyers.
Don’t forget the garden
Once summer is over, it can be tempting to neglect your garden, but this is a mistake! A tidy, well-maintained garden will help convince your buyers that, come spring, they won’t have to invest lots of time clearing it out. Leaves should be swept away, weeding done and lawns mowed. And you can always add a splash of late-season colour by planting flowers like dahlias, begonias and geraniums, which will bloom until the first frosts come along.
If you are thinking of selling this autumn, now is the ideal time to contact us and get your house on the market. Give us a call to arrange a free, no obligation valuation – we’d be delighted to come and see you, even if you’re just curious as to what your house is worth.
